AKTE 01.9 / DIE LAGEThe German job seeker visa split in two
For years there was one answer: a six-month visa to come to Germany and look for qualified work. The skilled-immigration reforms took that apart. What remains under § 20 AufenthG is a job-search permit for people who earned their qualification in Germany — graduates, people finishing an Ausbildung, researchers, and those completing a recognition procedure.
If you qualified abroad, your route is the Chancenkarte instead. Same goal, different statute, different rules on hours and length. Most of the confusion around this search term is people reading the rules for one route and applying under the other, so the first section below is simply working out which one is yours.
AKTE 2026-0828The short version
Qualified in Germany? § 20, up to 18 months, work as much as you like while you search. Qualified abroad? The Chancenkarte, one year, 20 hours a week. Either way you must prove you can support yourself for the whole period before it is issued.
